Despite a full outside refresh, the ’20 Passat is actually really similar to the outgoing design. Should the safe, gently revitalized Passat earn an area in your driveway?
Despite being a new automobile, the drivetrain of the new Volkswagen Passat is nearly unchanged from the 2019 Volkswagen Passat design. While not specifically discussed on vw.com, it appears that the turbocharged 2.0L 4-cylinder is back, as is the 6-speed auto. The engine still produces 174hp, yet the torque is up 23 lb-ft to 207 lb-ft. It’s anticipated to still reach up to 36mpg on the freeway, but the added torque indicates it ought to seem a little quicker off the line.
The 2020 Passat redesign is a mild one, not revolutionary (not that there’s anything wrong with that) and highly resembles the outgoing model. The exterior styling seems as if the designers took the previously high end style and made an even more refined version. The brand-new LED outside illumination and optional 19-inch R-Line wheels give the Passat a feel of sporty opulence. When you slip into the driver’s seat you’ll notice that the interior cabin has copied the same evolutionary design updates as the outside. The dash, gauges, and infotainment system all resemble the previous design, just in a sleeker design.
Tech continues to be a big selling point for brand-new car buyers and while the brand-new Volkswagen Passat hasn’t obtained any kind of new tech features what it does offer is very good. A touchscreen infotainment system including voice control, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and optional NAV round out some of the amazing technology offerings. On the safety and security side, automated emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, forward-collision warning, and back cross-traffic alert are parts on all all-new Volkswagen Passat models. Adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist are optional at an additional expense.

I purchased a VW ID.4 from Kearny Mesa Volkswagen and was disappointed to find out that it has two active safety recalls. It's now been over five months since I was placed on the waiting list for a loaner vehicle so the necessary recall service can be performed.

I purchased a VW ID.4 from Kearny Mesa Volkswagen and was disappointed to find out that it has two active safety recalls. It's now been over five months since I was placed on the waiting list for a loaner vehicle so the necessary recall service can be performed.
Each time I reach out, I’m given a different excuse for the delay. It’s frustrating and makes it feel like my safety concerns are being brushed aside.
